Make Money

Afford the life you want

Get a raise or promotion

It is easier to save and invest when you make more money. Position yourself for a raise or promotion by doing a great job at work and talking to your manager about your career. When you knock it out of the park at work, it is easier to find sponsors in your organization who will create opportunities for you.

Reach out to people you respect at work and get their advice on what to do to advance your career. It's okay to talk about your accomplishments and be specific about where you want to get to. People won't know how to help you unless you tell them and ask for something specific.

For example, instead of saying "I would love to know how to get a promotion," you can say "I admire your role as a supply chain manager. Can you please share what steps I need to take to become one?" The more specific you get, the easier it is for a potential sponsor to determine if they can help or to introduce you to someone else who can help.

Switch to a higher paying job

If you've reached the pay cap at your job, you can switch jobs to make more money. Find a higher-paying job in your industry or develop profitable skills and switch careers. What do you like to do? Are there better-paying jobs that need that skill?

For example, if you are very organized and previously worked as an executive assistant, you can get a project management certificate and start a new career as a project manager.

If you need more ideas, take a look at which jobs pay the most and see if any of them are a good fit for you. You can learn new skills in 4 weeks to 2 years to position yourself for a higher-paying job.

Start a business or side hustle

Do you have experience in your field or a great idea? You can turn your experience or idea into a business.

Not ready to start a business but want to make more money? Consider supplementing your income with a side hustle. You can make money in your free time online and in person using new or existing skills.
